Join us in a new kind of workshop for Beadology Iowa. This workshop will be a combination of lecturettes, demonstrations, and experiential learning about the various techniques and strategies for designing and creating multi-strand pieces. Participants are encouraged to bring multi-strand pieces in their collection—those that work and those that don’t—to be incorporated into the conversation. No experience necessary.

Teneriffe Embroidery Earrings

The lacy embellishment used in pine needle basketry is adapted for earrings. Using dyed raffia and beads, students should complete at least one earring and receive materials for the second one. Students will choose the color they wish from prepared kits.

Bring sticks, wood, wings, leaves, buttons or any other objects with an intriguing texture. Some will be provided in class. Learn to create textures in BronzClay. Manipulate the clay to form earring components. Piece will be fired and tumbled the next day, so students will have to come back to pick up their pieces and assemble their earrings on their own.

Participants will use solid boro glass to make human figures. Learn how to add glass to create depth. Use tools to work on details. Hone your boro skills by sculpting human anatomy in glass. Need a bit more muscle? Add some glass. Need braided hair? Twist your glass and add it on. The possibilities are endless.

Make cubed right angle weave (CRAW) frames and learn to connect them with peyote and brick stitch to make a negative space bracelet. Two different embellishment techniques make this a great project for learning how to combine different beading stitches and three bead sizes to create a fun and wearable bracelet. This bracelet can be made into a bangle or attach a clasp.

Learn how to use jewelry making tools to make a wrapped loop. This skill allows you to make dangles for earrings or pendants that are beautiful and secure. A second skill taught is making a closed wrapped loop inside of a closed loop, allowing you to attach dangles to a closed loop such as a chain. You will make earrings from glass, stone, pearls, and Swarovski crystals.

This intricate-looking project is great for wire weaving beginners and focuses on the coiled wire decoration that sits along the edge of a gemstone cabochon. Students will get a fundamental understanding of weaving with decorative bands, create a double spiral and learn how to use household tools to make the wire weaving process easier. A multi-speed drill demonstration will be provided during class on how to pre-coil wire for future projects.
