Make 3 Pairs of Earrings: Intro to Wirework through Kirkwood Community College

Prerequisites: No experience needed.
This is a great introduction to wirework. Two skills are learned and practiced—making a closed wrapped loop and making this loop into another closed loop. This set of skills allows you to make secure earrings, pendants, and chains. You will make earrings from Czech pressed glass, stone, fresh water pearls, and Swarovski crystals. No previous experience is necessary.
This class serves as the pre-requisite for many Beadology Iowa classes.

Make a Mala with Optional Guided Meditation

Make your own prayer bracelet, called a Mala, using elastic, beads, and a tassel. Prayer beads are a traditional tool used to count the number of times a mantra is recited when praying or meditating. Many religious practices use a form of mala. This mala will be in the Buddhist/Hindu tradition of 27 beads. For those who choose to participate, a guided meditation using your newly constructed mala will take place at the end of class.

Learn to make a ring band to size. Then add a stone or glass bead as the focal. This is a way to learn and enhance your metal working skills and to learn tricks to size a ring professionally.

Making glass beads is great fun and an opportunity to play with fire in a controlled and supportive environment. This class will teach you the art of lampworking, a technique of using a torch and melting Italian Effetre glass rods to create various shapes. Safety and appropriate equipment handling are emphasized. Your beads will need to stay in a kiln overnight to be annealed.
*NOTE:Participants must be at least 15 years old.*

Make Your Own Ear Wires

Prerequisites: Any wire work experience.
Use commons household objects to make templates for three different styles of ear wires in copper. Then chose one to make one again with Argentium sterling wire. You’ll be able to custom make ear wires to match the materials used in your other handmade jewelry.

Making Textures in Metal Clay

Prerequisites: No experience needed.
This techniques class will leave you with samples of BronzClay with varied textures made from embedding objects into the clay. Bring sticks, wood, wings, leaves, buttons or any other objects with an intriguing texture. Some will be provided in class. Samples will be fired and tumbled the next day, so students will have to come back to pick up their pieces.

Masking in Glass–Next Steps in Lampworking

Prerequisites: simple soldering, see Soldering Sampler class earlier on November 19.
Use your soldering skills to make a bezel around a stone cabochon. Participants will make a simple pendant as a vehicle for learning metal bezeling skills. Students will be using a butane torch, so please wear natural fiber clothing.
Take both Soldering Sampler and Metal Bezels for double rewards points.

Metal Chain Making and “S” Hook

This little jewel of a basket incorporates a coiled beginning and chain and wheat stitches, all held together with artificial sinew. Explore shaping with the coiled technique to produce the perfect basket to hold your favorite earrings or rings. To finish the basket, make a lid that fits perfectly and features a bead of your choice on top.
Make 2 Bracelets: Intro to Stringing through Kirkwood Community College

This class places a focus on professional stringing and design techniques. You will make two bracelets using Czech Republic glass beads and sterling silver. Two different stringing strategies will be taught: nylon finished with bead tips and flexible wire finished with crimp beads. Both bracelets will be secure and beautiful.
