Kumihimo Bracelet with Button Closure

Expand your kumihimo finishing skills beyond glue-in endcaps. Learn how to make a button & loop closure for a textured Kongoh Gumi (round braid) bracelet. This project was designed and the instructions created by Laurel Kubby.
The cost of this class is different if you have tools or not. Tools you will need include: a marudai or round kumihimo foam disk, and 8 weighted bobbins. If you don’t have tools, register with “need tools”. Click “select options” below to register for this class.

Kumihimo Charm Bracelet through Kirkwood Community College

This is a great introduction to the Japanese tradition of Kumihimo. Learn to use a disk to braid satin cord. You will have a selection of charms to add to your weaving. No experience needed.

Kumihimo Companion Animal Collar

Prerequisites: No experience needed.
Use a Kara-Yatsu flat kumihimo braid in two colors of satin cord to create a collar for your favorite companion animal. Add a ring to hang tags and connect a lead. A medium sized quick release will be used. Foam disk, 8 weighted bobbins, and weight container included with the tool fee.
Registration fee goes down to $68 if you have and bring tools needed for this class.

Kumihimo Edo Yatsu Bracelet

Prerequisites: Kumihimo Basic Round Braid--see class on Fri. October 6.
You feel comfortable with Kongoh Gumi (basic round braid) and are ready to learn a new braid. Edo Yatsu, also known as basketweave braid, is another useful kumihimo braid. Learn how to braid around a core as well as adding beads to the braid. This class that will prepare you for continuous beaded braids, if you desire.
Note: Take all three Kumihimo Immersion classes Oct 6-8 for $300–save $54.

Lace Earrings

Prerequisites: Any seed bead weaving experience.
Learn to net on both sides of a beaded spine to make incredible lace earrings. Instruction on color grading will be provided. Embellish the tips of the lace to really create some flare. We will be using size 11° and 15° seed beads.

Using silver and copper wire, add Effetre glass to the bottom, and you have a fancy, handmade, glass headpin. Take this technique in whatever direction you please by adding embellishments or encasement.

Make 2 Bracelets: Intro to Stringing through Kirkwood Community College

This class places a focus on professional stringing and design techniques. You will make two bracelets using Czech Republic glass beads and sterling silver. Two different stringing strategies will be taught: nylon finished with bead tips and flexible wire finished with crimp beads. Both bracelets will be secure and beautiful.

Make a Mala with Optional Guided Meditation

Make your own prayer bracelet, called a Mala, using elastic, beads, and a tassel. Prayer beads are a traditional tool used to count the number of times a mantra is recited when praying or meditating. Many religious practices use a form of mala. This mala will be in the Buddhist/Hindu tradition of 27 beads. For those who choose to participate, a guided meditation using your newly constructed mala will take place at the end of class.

Make a Stone/Glass and Metal Ring to Size

This class will teach you the art of lampworking, a technique of using a torch and melting Italian Effetre glass rods to create various shapes. Safety and appropriate equipment handling are emphasized. Your beads will need to stay in a kiln overnight to be annealed.

Make Your Own Ear Wires

Use commons household objects to make templates for three different styles of ear wires in copper. Then chose one to make one again with Argentium sterling wire. You’ll be able to custom make ear wires to match the materials used in your other handmade jewelry.

Making Textures in Metal Clay

This techniques class will leave you with samples of BronzClay with varied textures made from embedding objects into the clay. Bring sticks, wood, wings, leaves, buttons or any other objects with an intriguing texture. Some will be provided in class. Samples will be fired and tumbled the next day, so students will have to come back to pick up their pieces.

Wide and Textured 20’s Weave Bracelet

Prerequisites: Any seed bead weaving experience.
This project provides lots of practice with a netting stitch. The embellishment is an innovate modification that provides texture through connecting sections of the bracelet together, rather than adding additional elements.
During the COVID-19 recovery period, classes are limited to 6 people on a first come first served basis via paying the registration fee. Face coverings must be worn during class and participants will be spaced at least 6 feet from each other. Tools will not be shared and will be cleaned before and after use.
