Awls are an important tool when it comes to thread. It can help control knots, such as with traditional pearl knotting, and help to undo knots as well. Sometimes, when used very, very carefully, an awl can be used to break a bead that’s too far down a thread to be removed. Do this with great caution because it can shred or cut the thread.
