Join Master Beader and Beadology Iowa co-owner Laurel Kubby for 3 days of intensive and fun kumihimo braiding. Take one class or all three. Seating is limited to 12 people per class.
Are you ready to push yourself to the next level? This will be our first class using 12 cords to braid. If you are comfortable with kongo-gumi, you will be surprised at how easily you can make this braid. Again, we will use satin cord for ease of learning a new braiding skill.
This class is appropriate for advanced beginners using either the marudai or the disc.

Drukin’ Kumihimo Bracelet

Prerequisites: Basic Kumihimo
Use 4mm druks (Czech round glass beads) and Toho 11/0s in a kongoh gumi (round) variation. You will learn to move non-paired beads, creating a rope that does not appear to spiral in the traditional way. This braid can be made on both a disc and marudai.
You can bring your own foam disk and weighted bobbins, or purchase them as part of the class fee for an additional $20. Please call to register if you need the tool kit.
During the COVID-19 recovery period, classes are limited to 6 people on a first come first served basis via paying the registration fee. Masks must be worn during class and participants will be spaced at least 6 feet from each other. Tools will not be shared and will be cleaned before and after use. This workshop will share 7 stitches that can be used in a beaded chain or lariat. Learn the stitch, practice a few inches and end up with a sampler style necklace of all the options presented. Discussion will include how to decide which stitch may best suit your purpose.

Bead crochet not your thing? Learn to use peyote stitch to mimic single stitch bead crochet. This technique was introduced in 2017 by Gerlinde Lenz. Participants will learn to follow a pattern that will repeat, so you get the hang of it. Be prepared to want more after learning this clever, addictive variation of peyote stitch. The end product is a slide to add to a lariat of your choice.

This round braid has a huge advantage over kongo-gumi, the first braid that most people learn. It does not spiral. This allows you to have beads hang along one edge (or 2) without distortion. This is perfect for necklaces & bracelets. In this class, you will make a necklace with Swarovski pearls along one edge.
This technique is suitable for beginners (with some experience) on the marudai & adventuresome, experienced beginners on the disc.

Learn how counted bead stringing can add pop to your Kongoh Gumi (round braid) beaded braids. Include in this class will be tips on adding a pendant or large-holed bead during the braiding process as well as an adjustable sliding closure.

Learn beaded kumihimo or expand your finishing skills beyond glue-in endcaps. Learn how to finish your Kongoh Gumi (round braid) bracelet with cones, a wire wrapped loop, and a lobster clasp. Tools needed to bring or purchase include a kumihimo foam disk and 8 weighted thread lockers or a marudai and 8 70 gram tamas.
This class serves as a prerequisite for the Saturday’s class. If you take both Friday and Saturday classes and don’t have tools, you just need to purchase one set of tools.
