Karen DeSousa was a Des Moines native. After retirement, she discovered the craft world of beading design and later, kumihimo, a traditional Japanese braiding art. She took classes, advanced rapidly and “unretired” to start a successful web-based business, Accent Bead Design, creating beaded designs and craft design books and selling materials in the U.S. and internationally. As an emerging American expert applying kumihimo to jewelry arts, Karen attended international conferences in the U.S., Kyoto, Japan and Manchester, England. This is a great introduction to the Japanese tradition of Kumihimo. Learn to use a disk to braid satin cord. You will have a selection of charms to add to your weaving. No experience needed.
Registration is through Kirkwood Community College. Register at: www.kirkwood.edu and go to Continuing Education and then search for Beadology Iowa under the instructor search. On site registrations will be taken if registration through Kirkwood meets minimum requirements of two participants.
$30 instructor fee/$38 materials fee.

Use a Kara-Yatsu flat kumihimo braid in two colors of satin cord to create a collar for your favorite companion animal. Add a ring to hang tags and connect a lead. A medium sized quick release will be used. Foam disk, 8 weighted bobbins, and weight container included with the tool fee.
