Learn to texturize brass and silver rings. Then size it to fit. Get or hone your soldering skills to complete your ring. Learn good clean up techniques. Make a few to stack. This is a great intro to soldering.
This class serves as a soldering prerequisite for next steps metalworking classes by Maggie.

Use whip stitch and brick stitch to hang fringe from a diamond shaped armature. Learn tips and tricks for fringe that hangs just right. Add a few dangles in the middle of the diamond and you have a classic yet contemporary pair of earrings.
Intro to Solid Borosilicate Glass

Learn how to manipulate solid borosilicate glass. Participants will make a variety of shapes that create glass skills of pushing, pulling, adding color, and making a bail. Shapes worked on in class include a pawn, basic marble, icicle pendant, and a mushroom pendant.

Friday Night Out: Byzantine Chain Maille Bracelet

Learn the basics of Byzantine chain maille to make a bracelet. Chain maille is a technique of taking individual open jump rings and putting them together to form a mesh or chain. Proper tool handling and opening and closing of rings will be emphasized.

Learn to make a wrapped loop using three fundamental jewelry making tools. Design a bauble for the bottom of a chain and connect it with wire work. A wrapped loop is stronger and more secure than an open loop—perfect for zipper pulls or bag accessories that need durability. Each participant will make two pulls and/or accessories.

Participants will learn to weave three strands of copper wire together, bending them into shape and anchoring the ends. A simple bail will also be created by bending wire. Variations to this pendant and ways to approach different shapes will be discussed. Just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Celtic Knot Bracelet

This class places a focus on professional stringing and design techniques. You will make two bracelets using Czech Republic glass beads and sterling silver. Two different stringing strategies will be taught: nylon finished with bead tips and flexible wire finished with crimp beads. Both bracelets will be secure and beautiful.
Registration is through Kirkwood Community College. Register at: kirkwood and go to Continuing Education and then search for Beadology Iowa under instructor in the advanced search. On site registrations will be taken if registration through Kirkwood meets minimum requirements of two participants.

Gem Duo Cube Pendant

Soldering Sampler

This workshop involves the fundamentals of soldering. Learn and hone a variety of soldering skills—connecting an open jump ring, adding a ring to another piece, and more. Practice both sweat and spot soldering. Leave with a variety of samples and a new set of skills.

Make Glass Beads–Intro to Lampworking

This class will teach you the art of lampworking, a technique of using a torch and melting glass rods to create various shapes. Safety and appropriate equipment handling are emphasized. Your beads will need to stay in a kiln overnight to be annealed.

Use a combination of peyote and herringbone stitches to create a curvy sided square with Delica beads. Then develop a pattern using peyote stitch for the bracelet band. The pattern for the bracelet’s center will make great matching earrings.

Swirl and Vortex Boro Marbles

Use clear solid boro glass rods to create marbles. The first will be a swirl marble, to perfect the technique used in the intro class. Then move on to a vortex design. Participants will make multiple marbles.

This project uses peyote and herringbone stitches to create square earring that look like a classic quilt square. Learn to follow a beading pattern. The earring are finished with a wire guard. You can invert the colors on the second square for a mismatched yet perfectly balanced look.
