Description:

Learn herringbone, or Ndeble stitch, a fundamental stitch used in many contemporary bead books and magazine projects.  Participants will learn to increase to make their piece wider in the middle and how to decrease to bring the end of their cuff down to the original width near the clasp.  The end result is a fun and fast beaded cuff bracelet. 

This class serves as the prerequisite for Herringbone Collar on January 17.

Cupped Copper Earrings

Description:

Learn to stamp and dap copper disks into earrings of your design.  Keep your copper bright or oxidize it for a different look.  Then add beads to the center and/or the bottom.  This is an active and loud class.  Ear wires provided are copper, sterling is an additional cost.

Intro to Borosilicate Glass

Learn how to manipulate borosilicate glass.  Participants will make a pawn for a chess set, a basic marble, and an icicle ornament.

Boro Fish/Dolphin

Using borosilicate glass, learn to push, pull, and shape hard glass into a fish or dolphin.  The end product can be used as a piece of sculpture or add a bail to make a pendant.

Soldered Pendant through Kirkwood Community College Continuing Education Program

Learn both sweat soldering and spot soldering.  Using wire disks and sterling wire, create a one-of-a-kind pendant.  You will be using a butane and/or propane torch in this class.

There is a $45 registration fee through Kirkwood and a $25 materials fee at the beginning of class.
On site registrations will be taken but not counted towards the minimum class size in order for the class to take place. 


Twisted Fringe Beaded Earrings through Kirkwood Community College

Description:
Learn the right touch to make your beaded fringe hang with just the right amount of dangle, yet have no thread showing. Then give it a little twist to give your fringe further dimension. This pair of earrings will focus on the fringe, yet includes ladder stitch and wire work.

Using different sized beads, create a curved collar using herringbone stitch.  These collars can be fun and funky or quite elegant.  Participants may opt to bring their own focal piece to add as a pendant to the collar.

Make 2 Bracelets: Introduction to Stringing

Description:

Bracelets are big this season.  Wearing multiple bracelets at once is even better.  This class places a focus on professional stringing and design techniques.  You will make two bracelets using two different stringing materials. One bracelet will be made strung on nylon using glass beads from the Czech Republic and sterling silver beads.  The second bracelet will be strung on flexible wire and made with handmade glass and Swarovski crystals.  You will learn how to use crimp beads to finish this bracelet.  Both bracelets will be secure and beautiful.

Make 3 Pairs of Earrings: Introduction to Wirework

Who doesn’t need a new pair of earrings?  Learn to make earrings for yourself or as gifts.  Two wirework skills will be practiced and used to make three pairs of earrings.  The first skill is making a closed wrapped loop that allows you to make earrings and pendants.  The second skill is making a closed wrapped loop inside of a closed loop, allowing you to attach dangles to chains.  You will make earrings from glass, stone, pearls, and Swarovski crystals.

Solid instruction on the use of jewelry tools will assist you in making three pairs of earrings.  You will receive encouragement in discovering simple yet elegant earring designs.

Making glass beads is great fun and an opportunity to do something outside of your normal routine. You?ll have an unusual response to give when friends ask you what is new in your life. This class will increase your hand-eye coordination and allow you to make beads that can be used in jewelry making. This class will teach you the art of lampworking, a technique of using a torch and melting glass rods to create various shapes. Safety and appropriate equipment handling are emphasized. Your beads will need to stay in a kiln overnight to be annealed.

Instructor fee through Kirkwood is $50 and there is a $45 materials fee at the beginning of class.
NOTE: Participants must be at least 15 years old. Registration is through Kirkwood Community College. Register at: www.kirkwood.edu and go to Continuing Education and then search for Beadology Iowa under the instructor search. On site registrations will be taken if registration through Kirkwood meets minimum requirements of two participants.
