Description:

Our 3rd Annual Bead Challenge has begun.  Purchase this kit and make anything you want from it--jewelry, sculpture, collage work, quilts, embroidery, a knitting project--anything.  You must use at least one of each of the kinds of items in the kit and turn it in by the deadline to qualify for the challenge.  You may add as many or as much of other materials as you desire. 

Those turning in qualifying finished work will be included in a one week exhibit starting October 17 with their name and name of their work prominently displayed. We will host a reception from 5-7pm that night to show off your work.  Artists will also have their name in the hopper that will be pulled randomly to win gift certificates.

Byzantine Chain Maille Bracelet

Learn the basics of byzantine chain maille to make a bracelet.  Chain maille is a technique of taking individual open jump rings and putting them together to form a mesh or chain. Proper tool handling and opening and closing of rings will be emphasized.

Soldered Pendant

Description:
Learn both sweat soldering and spot soldering.  Using wire disks and sterling wire, create a one-of-a-kind pendant.  You will be using a butane and/or propane torch in this class.

This class fulfills the prerequisite for the Metal Bezel class on October 25.

Boro Fish/Dolphin

Using borosilicate glass, learn to push, pull, and shape hard glass into a fish or dolphin.  The end product can be used as a piece of sculpture or add a bail to make a pendant.

Twisted Sister Beaded Bracelet through Kirkwood Community College Continuing Education Program

Description:

Learn right angle weave to make this easy bangle bracelet.  Then add a twist of embellishment and you have your finished look.  Wear these alone or make a set and stack them.  This technique is great to use as a lariat, too.

www.kirkwood.edu and go to Continuing Education and then search for Beadology Iowa under the instructor search.  On site registrations will be taken if registration through Kirkwood meets minimum requirements of two participants.

Saturn Beaded Bead

Description:
Use peyote stitch to cover a wooden bead.  Learn to decrease with peyote stitch by using different bead sizes and by reducing the number of beads in each row.  Embellish around the equator of bead to form the “Saturn” rings.  These beads make wonderful focal pieces for a necklace and a smaller version is great for earrings.

Description:
Learn to use peyote stitch to bezel a rivoli, a round Swarovski crystal with a point on the back. Once your beaded bezel is complete, you can embellish it, add a peyote bail, and you have a sparkly pendant that can be added to chain, leather, or a beaded lariat.

Make 3 Pairs of Earrings: Intro to Wirework through Kirkwood Community College Continuing Education Program

Description:

Who doesn’t need a new pair of earrings?  Learn to make earrings for yourself or as gifts.  Two wirework skills will be practiced and used to make three pairs of earrings.  The first skill is making a closed wrapped loop that allows you to make earrings and pendants.  The second skill is making a closed wrapped loop inside of a closed loop, allowing you to attach dangles to chains.  You will make earrings from glass, stone, pearls, and Swarovski crystals.

Solid instruction on the use of jewelry tools will assist you in making three pairs of earrings.  You will receive encouragement in discovering simple yet elegant earring designs.

Description:

Learn how to combine 2-holed half-bricks and seed beads to create a flat carpet that looks like basket weave or tweed.  You will create a wide cuff bracelet that will end in a magnetic clasp.  This bracelet will get a lot of attention, so be ready to make more than one.

Winged Bail--Must Bring a Focal Bead

Description:

Every beader needs a collection of bail patterns for their various necklaces.  In this class you will create a peyote stitch bail that can be made in many sizes for a variety of needs.  Bring your own focal bead.  Each student will have the opportunity to consult with the instructor to design a unique bail attachment of her/his focal bead.  Students will share their ideas to create multiple choices for future pendants.

Kumihimo Bootcamp--Floral Bracelet

Learn the basics of kumihimo, the art of Japanese braiding.  Start with thread only, move on to adding seed beads to the braid, then flower beads.  Repeat this process backwards to complete your bracelet.  Get many technical tips in this one project.
